Vision
New Zealand's leader in creating value through standardisation
Standards are key enablers of New Zealand's economic success and a wide range of public good outcomes. The Standards Council's main purpose is to promote and champion the benefits of Standards for all New Zealanders, while encouraging government, industry, and the community to value and participate in our activities.
Mission
To improve New Zealanders’ lives – people across all sectors contribute to the development and implementation of Standards solutions.
Values
Making a difference
We are committed to improving the lives of all New Zealanders.
We know that Standards can make a difference.
We look for ways to do things better every day.
Welcoming a challenge
We treat challenges as opportunities.
We respond quickly to new opportunities.
We use challenges to learn and grow.
Working together
We go the extra distance to help others.
We encourage ideas from everyone.
We communicate openly and treat each other fairly.
People
We have 40 people working in Product Development, Marketing and Customer Services, Strategic Development and Governance, Standards Solutions, and Shared Services. We are supported by over 2000 New Zealanders who volunteer their time and expertise to make up the committees that develop Standards solutions.
History
Why was Standards New Zealand established?
On February 3, 1931 the Hawkes Bay region was struck by the worst earthquake in New Zealand’s history. The quake measured 7.9 on the Richter scale. The death toll was 256, fire spread throughout Napier and Hastings, major Napier buildings and landmarks were completely destroyed, areas of coastline were dislodged, and the landscape changed forever. Following this disaster, Standards New Zealand was established to ensure future such events did not result in the same loss of life. Following the development of the first earthquake Standard in 1932, there are now over 650 building-related New Zealand Standards. Many provide guidance for designers and builders on how to comply with the Building Code – all of which benefit industry and New Zealand communities.
Today Standards New Zealand has a catalogue of nearly 3000 Standards covering a wide range of topics including: health and disability, sport and recreation, energy efficiency, fire safety, and fertility services to name a few.
