Flame retardants are chemicals used either to prevent something from catching fire; or, if a product is burning, to reduce the rate at which flames can spread.
There are a number of flame retardants that are subject to restrictions in use, as defined in REACH Annex XVII (formerly covered by the three EU Directives listed in the table below) and Directive 840/2004/EC.
