PAHs - Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH)
What are PAHs?
Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, or PAHs, are a group of chemicals that are formed during the burning of coal, oil, gas, refuse and tobacco.PAHs occur naturally or can be man-made.
Why are They a Problem?
They have been classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic and toxic to reproduction.
What EU Legislation Exists?
REACH Annex XVII (Formerly known as EU Directive 2005/69/EC) places restrictions on the marketing and use of PAHs in extender oils and tyres. Although not part of the legislation, certain European retailers require suppliers to test for PAHs in products such as shoes with rubber soles and jackets with a neoprene rubber coating.
