Pesticides and Insecticides
Currently there is no legislation directly relating to pesticides and insecticides on textiles and leather, although their use is controlled under a number of different regulations and conventions such as the EU Pesticides Directive and the World Health Organisation, International PIC (Rotterdam) and POP (Stockholm) conventions.
Pesticides are widely used in both animal rearing and fibre growing. By the time the finished product gets to store, only trace amounts of pesticides will remain, having been lost during processing. However, whilst the consumer is not therefore at risk, use of pesticides affects the farmers and local communities where the animals and crops are grown.
Certain pesticides are toxic, carcinogenic, reprotoxic and irritants. They get into local water supplies when animals and crops are sprayed, and hence into the food chain.
