pH

pH measures the acidity or alkalinity of a substance. pH 1 is strongly acidic, pH 14 is strongly alkaline, and pH 7 is neutral.

Human skin is approximately pH 5.5, and extremes of pH can cause skin irritation. It is important to return fabrics to as close to neutral after the various bleaching, dyeing and finishing processes.

Extremes of pH can also lead to damage of the base fabrics and to metal components on garments that undergo garment wash treatments. Cellulosics are very susceptible to acids and instances of weakened cotton fabrics are not uncommon.

No legislation exists in Europe, although many retailers specify limits for pH in their store group performance manuals. These are often around pH 4.5 - pH 8.

Czech Republic: Amendment 521/2005 Coll. of Regulation 84/2001 Coll. "Hygienic requirements on toys and products for children up to age 3 years" applies. For all textile products, pH must fall between 4.0 - 7.5 (shake 2g sample in 100ml water at 20 degree C for 2 hours). For all leather products, pH must fall between 3.5 - 8.5 (shake 5g sample in 100ml water at 20 degree C for 6 hours).
