The Bureau of Standards, Metrology & Inspection (BSMI) of Taiwan announced on 27 June 2012 restrictions on the uses of eight phthalates (as shown below) in commodities of high safety concerns including toys and children’s products. With immediate effect, toys, erasers, children’s apparels, children’s bicycles, etc. shall be subjected to mandatory inspection for phthalates according to the relevant standards or test methods with total phthalates content limited at 0.1% by weight.

Products that are subjected to the mandatory phthalates requirements cover not only toys and children’s products, but also plastic items of the following:
