S1. Scope.  This standard specifies burn resistance requirements for materials used in the occupant compartments of motor vehicles.

S2. Purpose.  The purpose of this standard is to reduce the deaths and injuries to motor vehicle occupants caused by vehicle fires, especially those originating in the interior of the vehicle from sources such as matches or cigarettes.

S3. Application.  This standard applies to passenger cars, multipurpose passenger vehicles, trucks, and buses.

S3A. Definitions. Occupant compartment air space means the space within the occupant compartment that normally contains refreshable air.

表面材料：2米或规定尺寸
内层材料：试样大小与数量：102mm×356mm×实际厚度（试样在汽车上实际应用的厚度，但是不大于13mm,若大于13 mm，则要切割成13 mm.）至少5块试样,若沿不同方向有不同燃烧速度，则要在不同的方向都要取样每个方向至少5块试样。若材料的尺寸不符合测试要求，要做成测试符合的要求的样品。

Standard Interpretation 标准解读：

FMVSS 302规定了汽车内饰材料水平燃烧特性的技术要求及试验方法。本标准适用于汽车（轿车、多用乘客车、载货汽车和客车）驾驶室和乘客舱内的装饰材料，具体包括：坐垫、座椅靠背、座椅套、安全带、头枕、扶手、活动式折叠车顶、装饰性衬板、遮阳板、地板覆盖板、窗帘、仪表盘、杂物箱、轮罩覆盖物等。

测试过程：

样品水平放置，用焰高38mm的本生灯施加火焰于样品边缘15S，并按照如下规定判定产品是否通过FMVSS 302测试。

对产品的评判要求：
(1)试样不燃烧，或火焰在样品上水平燃烧的速度不超过102mm/min
（注：当样品表面是切割出来的，则这个判定要求不适用于测试该表面火焰水平燃烧速度)；
(2)从测试记时开始，若样品燃烧的时间不到60秒，就停止燃烧了，且从记时开始那个位置起，样品的损毁长度没有超过51mm，则认为其满足FMVSS302的要求。
（注：记时开始位置为离点火端38mm处，当火烧到此位置开始记时）

鉴于各种汽车内饰零件实际情(零件应用部位、布置方法、使用条件、引火源等)和本标准中规定的试验条件之间有许多差别，本标准不适用于评价汽车内饰材料所有真实的车内燃烧特性。
