Disperse dyes are highly coloured small molecules which colour the material without a chemical bond. The dye molecules are extremely small, small enough to fit into the pores of the fibres.
Disperse dyes are usually applied at temperatures above the boil. However, to save time and money, polyester can be dyed at the boil by use of dye carriers.
These are organic solvents which break up the disperse dye molecules into even smaller particles.
The solvents used, mainly chlorinated aromatics and phenolic compounds, are known to be toxic, carcinogenic or skin irritants.
No EU legislation exists, but they are regulated by voluntary eco-testing schemes such as Oeko-tex and the EU Eco Label.
